IN PITCH TO CATHOLIC CONSERVATIVES, TRUMP FOCUSES ON CONSERVATIVE RATHER THAN CATHOLIC

Donald Trump, whose campaign has mostly ignored voters of faith other than white evangelical Protestants, made his appeal for votes on a conservative Catholic platform.  Trump mostly focused on the 'conservative' rather than the 'Catholic.'

The pitch took the form of an interview on EWTN.  EWTN is backed by an influential right-wing donor network to give favorable coverage to Republican politicians and the Trump White House.  These wealthy conservative Catholics donors include some of the leading anti-Pope Francis extremists.

In his pitch, Trump made passing reference to the abortion issue, which many consider a transactional matter with him before launching into stating "... when it comes to all of the things, these people are going to take all of your rights away, including Second Amendment, because, you know, Catholics like their Second Amendment. So I saved the Second Amendment. If I wasn’t here, you wouldn’t have a Second Amendment. And pro-life is your big thing and you won’t be on that side of the issue, I guarantee, if the radical left, because they’re going to take over, they’re going to push him around like he was nothing."

The Catholic Church has long stood for sensible gun regulation.  Dismissing abortion as "your thing" is offensive to a broad range of Catholics, liberal and conservative.

Trump also falsely claimed that the Democrats want to prevent American from going to church.  Vice President Biden and Speaker Nancy Pelosi regularly attend Mass while Trump rarely goes to any church.

The rest of the interview consisted of Trump rambling on general issues without any reference to Catholicism.
